We all face the problem of acne in our teenage due to hormonal changes as when we hit puberty, the production of a hormone called androgen increases in both girls and boys. And at this stage, androgen makes the oil glands bigger which cause excess sebum production, and as a result, this blocks follicles and causes an overgrowth of acne bacteria.
But acne at the age of 25 or after 25 can be very frustrating. This problem is also called Adult acne or postadolescent, here acne sits much deeper within the skin layers. Adult acne is more painful as compared to teenage acne and are cyclic. Also, these acnes last lost, and sometimes they leave permanent scars. There are a lot of reasons behind these problems, let’s check out below
Causes of Adult Acne
Hormonal fluctuations are one of the causes behind the problem of adult acne. Most of the times, small cyst build on the edges of the ovaries cause Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) in women. In this, levels of androgen in the female body increases and results acne. According to the dermatologist Rebecca Kazin, M.D., F.A.A.D., of the Washington Institute of Dermatologic Laser Surgery and the Johns Hopkins Department of Dermatology, adult acne usually rears its ugly head in the form of painful cystic acne around the chin, neck, and back.
Birth Control Pills
Birth Control pills block the production of androgen, as they contain both estrogen and progesterone which helps in decreasing the amount of androgen. But, certain birth control pills cause acne as they contain progestin which causes acne and worsen breakouts.
In the age of 40s and 50s women often experience acne. This is the time when your menstruation ends and change in hormones like either a decline in estrogen levels or an increase in testosterone levels which may cause breakouts. Some women prefer to undergo Hormone Replacement Therapy to ease their symptoms. In Hormone Replacement therapy hormones called progestin is introduced in our body to replace the lost estrogen and progesterone at the time of menopause. And this process also makes your skin breakout.
Cleansing Face Frequently
If you cleanse your face too frequently and intensely, this will make your acne condition worse. When we wash our skin two times a day, skin becomes dry and that time skin produces more oil to overcompensate. Never rub your face to clean your skin every day because it will promote acne.
Chemicals and Toxins
Sometimes, toxins and chemicals in skin care products can irritate your skin that causes inflammation leading to acne. Inflamed skin is more prone to build od up the white blood cells that may cause pimples to appear. So, always check the products you apply on your skin.
Drinking excess of alcohol, eating unhealthy foods more frequently taking prescription drugs sometimes cause adult acne. Junk foods are unhealthy for overall health and eating them on a daily basis may trigger acne problem in adults.
Stress is the one of the cause for hormonal changes. Stress causes an increase in the androgen hormone, which encourages your sebaceous glades to overproduce sebum. The androgen hormone is responsible for developing male traits. Excess of androgen is one of the causes of acne in males.
