You might have heard that carrots improve your vision. But is this true?
There are some myths and facts behind this. In reality, carrots are good for our eyes, but it is not necessary that carrots will improve the vision. Carrots or vegetable rich in Vitamin A promotes the overall eye health, but it won’t give vision to a blind person.
Why carrots are essential to eat for Eyes
Carrots contain beta-carotene which our body converts into Vitamin A, and Vitamin A is the most essential nutrient for eyes and color vision. It helps in forming the photoreceptors; these are the cells which recognize the images and send signals from eyes to the brain and allow brain to process the image so we can know what we are looking at. If we don’t take Vitamin A in our diet than our ability to transmit images to the brain will get reduced, but it does not vanish completely.
Carrots are a rich source of Vitamin A and rhodopsin. Rhodopsin is a biological pigment found in the rods of the retina and G-protein-coupled receptor(GPCR), and it is extremely sensitive to light which enables vision in low-light conditions. In the deficiency of rhodopsin, we won’t be able to see at night clearly, or you can say it will affect the night vision.
Vitamin A or eating carrots can improve eyesight in case of the person who are Vitamin A deficient or who has poor vision due to deficiency of Vitamin A. Other than Vitamin A, zinc is also another element required for eyes and lack of zinc can also lead to night blindness. Carrots also contain a small amount of zinc, and this is why it is said that carrots help in improving the vision.

Fruits and veggies that are the source of vitamin C include peppers, citrus fruits, berries, tropical fruits, potatoes, tomatoes, and green leafy vegetables.
